Our history
Sitting atop the tallest hill in the Margaux appellation, discover this magnificent estate dedicated to the splendor of wine and to the French “art de vivre”. From the tasting parlors to the Orangery, from the wooden vat room to the underground barrel cellars, this place inspires visitors, enthusiasts, and history and wine lovers alike. Pass the gateway of Château du Tertre and your delight begins…
A Classed Growth in the 1855 classification, Château du Tertre’s history begins in the 12th century, when the land was owned by the Lord of Arsac.
The estate as we know it today was created by an Irishman, Peter Mitchell, creator of Bordeaux’ first bottle-making factory, along with his family in the 18th century. The château itself was built in 1736.
The 19th century saw a succession of talented and passionate winemakers presiding over Château du Tertre and the wines, known for their lovely colour and exquisite perfume, develop a wordwide renown.
After a period of creation and reconstruction during the 1960s and 1970s, the estate was purchased in 1997 by the Dutch businessman Eric Albada-Jelgersma. He invested heavily to restore the château and to modernise and restructure the cellars and the vineyard, providing the means by which to do justice to its magnificent “terroir”. After his death in 2018, Mr Albada Jelgersma’s children sold the estate in 2021.
Today the running of Château du Tertre is assured by the Helfrich family, from Alsace.
